Fall 2019 Regatta

The Fall regatta in Midland Ontario was another fun weekend! Eight boats were in the water for the regatta, but only 6 crews were available. Pride was very competitive finishing 3rd. The boat is back in Michigan for the winter with a sort list of repairs and modifications planned for winter. We are looking forward to a big group for the 2020 North American Regatta in June.

Update after the 2019 North American Regatta

Pride was returned to racing form over the winter with new sails and many modifications, as well as fresh paint. Work continues but for the summer it is racing again as we learn to get the most from this boat. Our new friends at the Texas Corinthian Yacht Club provided additional background and history on this boat as well as some cool old photos at the North American Regatta in June. This has been a great adventure in terms of the people that have contributed to the story. Looking forward to another update of this story in September!

Pride is sailing again!

It took more work than planned, but Pride sailed in the fall 5.5 regatta in Midland Ontario at the end of September. Thanks to all the folks who chipped in to make this happen! The sails are from US93 - and were the ones that came with the boat. We believe that this boat can be competitive again, and it is indoors for the winter where it will get additional service in preparation for the June 2019 regatta.

We purchased this boat in Georgia last week. The boat has been indoors for the last 12 years and is structurally in very good condition. Leonard Kirkham worked at the Seabrook boatyard in Houston and bought the "Pride of Seabrook" in 1990. He was a master shipwright trained in England, and a world class sailor. The boat was raced as "Woodstock" after moving it to Georgia and we understand that 'Len' was to be respected on the course. A new deck was installed before his death last year and seems to have returned it to the original configuration. He took good care of the boat and I am proud to be the new owner. We have some work to do, but hope to have it sailing in the fall regatta in Midland, Ontario in September.

In the early fifties the new International 5.5 Meter Class of sailboats would attract Kings, Crown Princes, and Texas oilmen. Even though Europe and the East Coast were leading the way in this new class, the men and woman from a small club in Texas were proving they could hold their own in regattas all over the world. The Fay brothers would make the cover of Sports Illustrated to the delight of members and the TCYC would continue to set the standard for one design sailboat racing on Galveston Bay.

The Corinthian and the International 5.5 Meter class may have been the best boats for racing on Galveston Bay after World War II but new changes in building materials were being developed and in the late sixties a new trend of fiberglass design hulls were attracting some attention from the global sailing community.
